How to create psychological safety in the workplace for your employees

Organisations need their employees at their creative best. Though this is beneficial to the organisation, the employees are carrying a risk in voicing ideas that are outside the box.

Those employees need a license to be creative. The first requirement of this licence is Psychological Safety, designing an environment where employees feel safe to voice their ideas, without feeling of their self-confidence and feeling of belonging being threatened.

Professor Edmondson defines psychological safety as:

“A belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns and mistakes and that the team is safe for interpersonal risk taking”

But how do we nurture Psychological Safety for employees? And how crucial is the role of a Line Manager in facilitating this emotional safety?
